Communities across the country are beginning to take action against the effects of global climate change, materials and resource depletion, water shortages, and the increased use of chemicals that pose a threat to our health and environmental security. One way this is being accomplished is through the adoption of local green building ordinances and programs. This website is intended to serve as a resource for communities that want to develop their own directives aimed at facilitating locally-based proactive solutions in the realm of green building. The genesis for this effort is the work done in the City of Rohnert Park, California – specifically their green building ordinance and related endeavors. In August of 2005, the Rohnert Park City Council directed staff to create a green building ordinance that contained mandatory provisions for all construction within the City of Rohnert Park. The primary result was a green building ordinance containing the most comprehensive green building requirements of any local community in the State of California when it became effective July 1, 2007. All new commercial and residential construction, commercial tenant improvements, residential additions more than 500 square feet in area, and City-sponsored projects are subject to the requirements of the ordinance. |
